“Hello Dolly’s” or “Magic Cookie Bars” I’ve been making these since 4th grade.  Mrs. Suder, my 4-H cooking project leader and a wonderful person, taught me how to make these and they have been a favourite ever since.

2-1/4 C finely crushed graham crackers (I usually crush an entire box or two in the food processor and keep the excess crumbs in a ziplock bag in the cupboard so the next time I have an almost instant dessert)

3/4 C. (1-1/2 sticks) butter or margarine, melted

1 (14-ounce) can  Sweetened Condensed Milk (NOT evaporated milk)

1-1/2 to 2 cups (8-12 ounces) semi-sweet chocolate chips

1-1/3 cups flaked coconut (i keep my leftover coconut in the freezer)

1 cup chopped nuts (my favourite are pecans)

Preheat oven 350 degrees

Line a 9×13 or 10×14″ baking pan with foil, spray with PAM.

Place butter or margarine on foil in pan and place pan in oven to melt butter. (I use the wrapper as a “protector” and smush the stick flat so it melts more quickly).

Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs on top of melted butter, gently mix with rubber spatula so foil doesn’t tear. gently press down evenly in pan.

evenly pour condensed milk over crumb base.

Sprinkle in layers over milk: chocolate chips, coconut and pecans.

Bake for at least 30 minutes until a bit more than golden brown.  You want it thoroughly cooked, not gooey.  if it needs more time and the top is already brown, cover with foil and bake longer.

Thoroughly cool, lift out of pan with the foil and cut into bars with a pizza cutter.  (Super versatile tool)
